Beckham
Congratulations Beckham on your forever home!
Update: Beckham is doing well. He had his stent removed and his nostril is healing nicely. He does have an ear infection right now, so please check back to see when he is ready to be adopted.
Update: 6/11/10 – Beckham had a nasal surgery to repair the right nostril yesterday. He tolerated the procedure well, no vomiting or loss of appetite or energy. He’s coughing, to be expected from being intubated and doc put a skin adhesive in the nostril to keep the sides from fusing together again. He said it’s like a band aid that will work itself out. He slept like a rock last night. He is not on meds but doc wants him back in for a f/u in 4-5 days.
Update: 6/5/10 – Beckham went in today for a follow up visit. His right nostril has fused together post laser surgery and is completely shut off. The chances of this happening are 1 in a million! If Beckham is the “one” in a million, maybe he should play Lotto tonight and be the “one” in a million winner!!!! He is scheduled for surgery on Tuesday to open up the nostril. As for his flea dermatitis – Beckham received an A+. His skin is healing nicely. The old stuff is beginning to flake off and soft, healthy skin, with fur, is coming in. Once he is cleared by the vet post surgery, he will be available for adoption. Keep checking back on him.

Update: 5-20-10: Today Beckham had his dental cleaning and laser surgery on his nares. His teeth are now pearly white and he can breathe so much better! He was happy to come home, promptly ate a small dinner and is acting like nothing out of the ordinary took place today. The best news – Beckham is Heartworm negative! His skin is healing very nicely – no more open, raw spots. Good nutrition, along with omega fatty acid vitamins, are working wonders on him. He has another week of antibiotic therapy but gladly takes his Keflex, provided it’s wrapped it something yummy, like cheese or chicken. I’m looking for his forever home.

Beckham had his appt. with doc at AVH yesterday. Good news – he does NOT have mange. Bad news – he has a severe case of flea dermatitis. However, flea dermatitis is the lesser of the two evils. He was given a steroid injection and is on Keflex for two weeks.
The dermatitis is in the classic flea area (on back close to tail) and is raw and bloody in spots from the biting and scratching. He continues to scratch but doc said it takes about 24 hours for the steroids to kick in and stop the itch. This morning I sprayed him with Gentocin (topical antibiotic) which virtually stopped the itching. The Benadryl has helped only a bit.
Adding excellent nutrition, a fatty acid multivitamin, and flea prevention, Beckham should be in good shape in a few weeks. Oatmeal shampoo helps soothe the infected area too and is on the agenda for this afternoon.
Other than the obvious skin issues, he is a cutie pie! He weighs 17.4 pounds, has a light apricot tone, classic diamond on his forehead and is a well behaved little boy. I’ve yet to hear him bark. Interestingly enough there was no hoopla upon entering my home. It’s as if he’s always been here. He’s adapted very well and adopted “Pug Daddy Mike” immediately. Smart little booger!
He is up to date on all his vaccinations, is neutered and microchipped. He was positive for hookworms yesterday and was medicated with an oral suspension at AVH. Polk County didn’t do a heartworm check so AVH will take care of that. Doc estimates him to be 2 years old and is in need of a dental and laser surgery for his stenoic nares. He has an elongated palate, which in combination with the nares, makes breathing a chore. Doc would like to perform the surgery this week.

Beckham….sorry we had to send you to jail:( but we werent sure if you were contagious to our dog. We look forward to you getting better. We have your picture with us! Get well soon! We named you “Patches” since you had patches of fur!
We will get Beckham better. Not to worry.
We met Beckham at the vet and he was very well mannered and adorable. Our son adored him(as did I
). Get better soon.
Beckham had his oatmeal bath, loved the massage and promptly fell asleep in Daddy Mike’s arms, commpletely and totally relaxed. He’s not scratching as much which is allowing his skin to heal. Dental cleaning and laser surgery on his nares is scheduled for Thursday as well as a HW check. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers.
I am so glad to hear Beckham is doing better!! Give him a hug from us! Such a sweet boy!
Checking on Beckham to see how he is doing!
Beckham’s bio will be updated soon. His right nostril fused itself together and is completely blocked. He is getting plenty of air, so not to worry. However, surgery to fix it is Tuesday. His skin is healing nicely – the old skin is sloughing off and healthy, pink skin is there. His fur is growning in, too. He is as sweet as apricot jam! Very loving.
Judi, he is gorgeous (just as you told me!). He looks so much like Nora with that apricot coloring. I hope he gets to his full fighting weight soon.
