Spence
Hi Everyone! I am Spence. I am a special needs pug and will remain with my foster mom in rescue. I am approximately 12-13 years old and I am deaf and blind. I am doing really well. My foster mom is teaching me hand signals to help me understand that I can map through the house and let her know when I need to go out and go potty.
I am a very vocal little boy. Prior to rescue, I was kept in a crate all the time, so I had no other way to let someone know I needed them other than to scream for them. I am getting better with it and I will hopefully continue to improve with the training that my foster mom is giving me.
I have Basil Cell Carcinoma which is a cancer, but it is one of the better ones to have. My tumors can be removed, and this Cancer does not spread like Mast Cell Cancer for example. I do have some yeast issues with my skin that my foster mom is really trying to get under control, but that will just take some time. I am on a better diet now and getting more nutrients that I need, so with lots of TLC and care my skin should clear up.
I am a very loving boy who has just never been taught how to be deaf and blind and has really never been well cared for.

Hi,
I don’t know if it could work for Spence. But, I have heard of dogs having hearing aids. If they are to work, they usually put them far enough in that the dog can’t get them out. Just a thought. Claudia Sabo
Thank you Claudia. We can look into this. I dont know if he would be a candidate or not. Dana-Foster Medical Director
Spence is a very special needs pug. When he is ready what kind of a home will he need? My heart breaks for him. I have 2 pugs who are so very loved.
Spencer came to us from the shelter and has many issues. He is a very sweet little boy that just wants to be loved and cuddled like any pug. However, Spencer cannot see well and does not hear. He has learned to map our home and find his way out the door. He is potty trained but you have to watch for him to let you know when he needs out. He will also cry out to let you know. We believe that he was kept in a crate for much of the time and cries out to get attention and communicate. Spencer also has a severe spinal issue and has a hard time rising. He is quite elderly in his nature. He had a skin condition and it is starting to heal and his coat is coming back. We are waiting on the doctor to determine if he can be rehomed for pychological reasons. Little Spence has been through a lot and we want him continue to make progress. I will update you all as I get info from his doctor. Juanita
