Times are tough for everyone. Jobs are disappearing, homes lost due to foreclosures, gasoline and food costs are sky-high while salaries stay the same or are decreased. We are all struggling just to keep our heads above water, with no end in sight. That’s just the people…think of the pugs.
From January 1, 2010 through May 1, 2010, Seminole County, one of our key rescue counties, took in 963 dogs. Of that number, 289 were adopted. 218 were euthanized. 143 were transferred to rescue organizations. 5 died of illness or injury. 271 were re-homed to their owners. 37 remain in the Animal Services Division, awaiting their fate.
Prior to the recession, Seminole County was taking in one half the numbers of dogs and adopting out twice as many. That should give you a clear picture of what this recession is doing to the animal rescue situation in Central Florida. But what about the pugs? The recession has been just as hard for them: the surrender numbers for pugs since the recession hit have doubled…and in some months tripled. First, rest assured, that all of the pugs taken into government shelters and kill shelters in the Central Florida area were rescued from those shelters by either Central Florida Pug Rescue, Inc. or one of our sister agencies. The bad news is that many of them, along with other pugs surrendered directly to us, are still in our foster care system.
With adoptions becoming rarer as the economy sinks, and with our intake numbers of homeless pugs doubling…and coming close to tripling last year’s numbers…we are in desperate need of foster homes. Foster homes provide shelter and care to our pugs until we can find them permanent homes. Central Florida Pug Rescue, Inc. provides veterinary care, medicines, food, bedding, harnesses, leashes, toys and other pug necessities that require financial output. What we ask of you, our foster parents, is patience…and lots and lots of LOVE. No foster parent in our organization is ever forced to take a pug…we try to match the foster pugs to households that suit them and where they will thrive. Foster parents have a major voice in selecting the permanent adoptive home for their foster pugs…and always retain the first right of adoption, should they choose to make their foster a permanent member of their family. If you ever have questions about your foster pug or a care problem, CFPR is there to help…24 hours a day, seven days a week…just a phone call away. Going on vacation? We have pugsitters. Want more information about fostering? Email us at cfppugs@yahoo.com or call us at 407-756-4998.
Becoming a foster parent for Central Florida Pug Rescue, Inc. has minimal risk, but the rewards are enormous. You become the saver of lives…and those pugs you save will love you unconditionally from day one…and for the rest of their lives, as they never forget their foster Moms and Dads, even as they move on to forever homes. And if you ever wanted to test your metal as a pug owner without a permanent commitment, this is the way to do it.
This recession is beating down too many good people and too many innocent pugs. Don’t give up…help us fight back, one little life at a time. Give these pugs your time and your love and we will help with the dollars. Go to www.centralfloridapugrescue.org and fill out a volunteer application online.
